Mixed Authentication

Mixed Authentication

Is it possible to have two methods of authentication running on a single Moodle site?

I'm looking into ways of allowing students from our feeder schools to have access to some of our courses.

We use LDAP for our internal users and as our feeeder schools dont share our AD domain we can't offer LDAP to them.

Is there any way we can set it up so internal users use LDAP to authenticate yet our feeder schools user a manual username / password?

Any advice or ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks

Karl

Yes, it is possible for users to have different (mixed) authentication/logins.
You might look into Moodle Networking http://docs.moodle.org/en/Moodle_Network

Have had experience with such a setup and really like the ability to "share" with another entity without having to worry about maintaining remote user accounts. This does require cooperation of the "other" MoodleMaster in setting up the relationship. Your feeder schools would need a Moodle of their own and those instances can reside on the same physical server.

Can share with you access to such a system if you'll email me. smile

Yours, in the "spirit of sharing",
Ken

Yes, you can. One way is to setup an external database that has all your student users, their passwords, etc. I've written about how to do this (as I'm sure others have) and included screenshots:

Hoping this is helpful,
