The results you can get importing a PowerPoint file vary greatly - depending on the version of MS Office you are using.
See this page which is specific to Importing PowerPoint:
http://docs.moodle.org/en/Import_PowerPoint
Remember, you can save from MS Office in earlier formats - we find that XP format is the most compatible.
However, when you are using Link to a File this should work without problem - as this is just like linking to a type of document - e.g. a word processing document or an image.
What is the error message you get when trying to link to a File?
If you are saving with an MS Office 2007 pptx(?) file extension then this could cause a problem with your browser perhaps? So, if the file does upload, but you cannot open it by clicking on it, try right-clicking and Save, and then open it. If this works, it must be your browser that does not recognise the file type

and it is not displaying rather it showing a blank screen.....
Hi,
I am a new moodler and am facing problems uploading ppt.
I have tried all the suggestions on the discussion forums.. Uploading as zip file, version change, uploading sample file.
I keep getting 'could not get data' error.
Any suggestions ??
- Prachi..
Does the same thing happen with a Word document for example? Please test.
Simply upload the file to your course Files area.
(PS - it's always good to state which version of Moodle you are using).
If a Word document uploads (and then a different PowerPoint file) there must be something wrong with the actual file.
The most likely reason is that your browser does not have a PowerPoint viewer installed.
Because the browser cannot directly display the file, it will naturally ask you to Open the file with PowerPoint, or Save it.

- Prachi..
Hii...
On moodling with 1.9.7 - i was able to upload a ppt once, but could not see the contents..
Now m unable to upload again.
What m doing is -
All of the PowerPoint slides get imported as Branch Tables with Previous and Next answers.
- Open up your PowerPoint presentation.
- Save it As a Web Page (no special options)
- The result of step 3 should be a htm file and a folder with all of the slides converted to web pages.
ZIP THE FOLDER only. - Go to your moodle site and add a new lesson.
- After saving the lesson settings you should see 4 options under "What would you like to do first?" Click on "Import PowerPoint"
- Use to the "Browse..." button to find your zip file from step 3. Then click on "Upload this file"
- If everything worked, the next screen should just display a continue button.
Error m getting is -
could not get data.
Pls help..
- Prachi..
Folks !
my ppt is finally up and looking good as a lesson.
This is what i was missing -
when you have your powerpoint you have to save it as html page
after that you will have two files..... 1 an htm file and one xxxfiles folder... you have to compress only the xxxfiles folder in order to import later that to your lesson.
Thanks for all the replies...
Cheers !
-Prachi....
This is excellent advice. I could import PPT files into lesson for the first time. Thanks for sharing.
With kind regards,
Hartmut
- In the open MS PowerPoint presentation
- In the "File" menu click on "Save as Webpage"
- Change or note "Save In" setting location and name
- The Save "file type" should be "Web Page"
- Click on "Save"
- This will create a file and a folder. The HTML file has links to files in the new folder of the same name as the HTML file.
- Using Windows Explorer or your favorite program
- Zip the new folder that contains the webpage files
- This is the zip file you will to import into Moodle.
- Zip the new folder that contains the webpage files
