Trying to Avoid Simultaneous Scoring

Trying to Avoid Simultaneous Scoring

We have multiple course aids who are in charge of scoring/grading online text assignment.

How can we avoid having two people score an assignment at the same time?

When one person is entering a grade/comment the assignment does not lock or prevent another person from choosing the same assignment to grade. Any ideas?

Bringing this back to the forefront -- we're having this same issue. If a teacher opens some assignments and works on grading, then all their progress is lost IF someone else (a TA, or someone from the SPLD dept) logs into the class and makes grading adjustments at the same time.

Is there a way to avoid this? The poor teachers don't know if someone's going in and grading while they are already grading... and the teachers who pop in to make  a grading adjustment aren't aware that the grade book is already in use....

Does anyone have any input??

John, we process about 600 essays weekly with multiple evaluators. To enable this without having any collisions/simultaneous grading we created a block to manage the queue (ours was designed to work with Turnitin but the basic design is still relevant). It's not released and we don't have a plan to, but the logic is simple if someone wanted to replicate:

  • all assignments are placed in a queue based on timestamp (oldest is first in the queue).
  • ability to grade is set at the course level (through roles)
  • the block has a button "Grade next" which when clicked by a grader assigns a submission by time stamp and removes it from the queue
  • once completed grading the grader clicks "done" and "grade next" now displays again.
  • graded assignments are not included in the queue.

We also built a "flag" button in the case that students made an incorrect submission or if there were any other issues so that another designated user (admin) could review.
