attachments to forum postings

Is there some setting that I can use that will allow my teachers to attach files already stored on moodle to their forum postings?  Now when they use the "Browse" button to find their attachment, they can only access materials on their computer, not those already stored in moodle.  I want to be able to have system files they can access to get the articles they want to send to students.  Is that possible?  If not, can we make it possible?  My teachers use many of the same articles over and over again for a number of "courses", so this would be very timesaving and make their lives much easier - to be able to send out forum postings from  any computer.

Thanks,
Joan

I use to upload my documents to www.docstoc.com so it is easy share them anywhere at my Moodle Course (resources, forums, blog, etc)

There are many good services for documents in the next sites

Thanks for the suggestion, Maryel.  I already have a shared folder that I can place documents in, but then I have to place them in both that folder and the moodle folder anyway so that I can link them to a course or two.

I'm really wondering why moodle can't search its own files for attachments, and would like that function added in any future updates if it doesn't already exist with some internal tweaking.

Hi Joan,

The good news is that this functionality is coming in Moodle 2.0 (see the Roadmap). glimlach

Hi Helen,

I checked out the Roadmap (Development:Using the File API) and, not being a programmer, I had a difficult time determining if in fact this change will allow me to browse for, access and attach in forum posts files already stored on Moodle.

  • Does 2.0 actually provide that functionality?
  • If so, when will 2.0 be available?

It does seem that the new functionality will open up file availability across Moodle areas - great for our use of Moodle, since we are not really a course-based program.  Thanks again for your response.

Sincerely,
Joan

As I understand things, Moodle 2.0 will indeed allow you to find files already stored in Moodle and attach them to forum posts.

Regarding when Moodle 2.0 will be available, please see the question about the Moodle 2.0 release in Administration FAQ.
