Moodle Vs NLMS (NHS Healthcare)

Hello everyone,

I have read few posts about using Moodle in NHS. We are also planning to implement with another two trusts. one of the trust is interested in National Learning management system (NLMS). I haven't looked at this system but did some research on Google. NLMS links with ESR system and update the staff record.

My question is How these systems are different from each other. I have read many posts on this forum. People have said both have different functionalities but no one has said how it is different. I have downloaded moodle and looked at the functionalities but I can not get information on NLMS. anyone from NHS who has used or looked at both these systems.

Thank you.

Hi Viral

The same is happening to us, we are being 'forsed' down the OLM route and to look at NLMS.  Although the NLMS is good for its e-learning content and free to the NHS it is not as flexible as Moodle, with moodle you can upload course documents, run NVQ's, post forums etc where as NLMS is very flat.  This site is a moodle based forum.

One of my managers are currently working on an options appraisal for these two systems, she may be happy to share this.

take Care

Clare

Hi All, I'm based at the LAS and am new to the NHS, I'm currently writing up our strategy and looking for a smilier review. Reading through the NHS Wales e-learning framework at the moment and they seem to be along the way with implementing moodle. I don't know how far along they have come in integrating moodle with EKSF or ESR. Raja smile

I have spoken to another guy who went to NLMS meeting and he said that NLMS can also provide features like Char, forum and you can upload videos. does anyone else aware of this? plus with NLMS we do not have to give hosting charges. for moodle we are planning to upload video so hosting is going to be really expensive.

Hi Viral,

You don't have to put your videos on your Moodle site, you can put them on a site like YouTube or YouTeacher and embed them from there. You don't even have to make them public.

Cheers,
Glenys

I don't think management will like it if I upload that on youtube because of privacy purpose.  I am going to look at the youtube website to see how can you make videos private. course leader wants to upload DVDs on moodle instead of making copies.

let me look at the youtube options and see how it goes.

Finally we have decided to go for Moodle and chosen hosting company with good hosting package. We are going to convert the DVD videos to FLV format and upload that to the hosting site.

I am working on theme now and planning to post new question soon. I am still interested people from NHS who is using moodle.

We're a hospital and have been using Moodle in one form or another for a few years now. I have just been reading about the proposed improvements coming to ESR in the next contract (2016?) and came across this thread here - is anyone still listening 4 years later? Be interested to get some updates from people.

I don't know anything about the NHS but I do know its possible to add / enrol users from external systems using web services:

http://docs.moodle.org/dev/Web_services_Roadmap

and to add Single Sign On plugins to Moodle.

This would need to be customised for the specific system / process you are using, but once written I am guessing it could be shared between the various NHS Moodle's.
