I have a couple of questions about the digest email functionality for forums:
If there is no post to a forum I'm assuming the daily digest email doesn't go out. Is that right?
And if there are multiple forums available in a couple of courses (say) and someone is subscribed to several, will they receive a single daily email with all of the forum activity, or will they get separate emails for each forum?

Yes are correct, if the forum(s) the user is subscribed to receives no posts during the day they will receive no email.
If there is multiple forums the user will still get one email, it will look like this:
Course1 > Forums > Forum name > Discussion topic name
Post thread name by person who posted - Date, Time
Re: post thread name by person - date, time
Course 1 > Forums > Other forum name > Discussion topic
post name by person - Date, Time
Course 2 > Forums > Forum name > Discussion topic
post name by person - Date, Time
etc etc until that day's emails are all listed. Once the discussion topic has been included in an email it won't be emailed again. If you have two Moodle sites each site will send a separate digest email.
