I have looked around a bit, and cannot seem to find a link to how to set up a quiz to be available ONLY after a student completes another activity. Specifically, I want to have the students "open and read" a moodle 'book', before the quiz becomes available.
Is this possible?

Short answer, in Moodle 1.9 you need a third-party patch. In Moodle 2.0 this will be standard, and there are some nice screencasts online by sam, who implemented this, showing you how it works.
