E-mail option: ping only?

E-mail option: ping only?

Good day!

We have been Moodling for a year or so, through a few versions, and have been evangelizing regularly to educational institutions (mostly K-12) across our region in the northwestern United States. Recently, at our organization's board retreat, some of our directors who have used Moodle over the last year made a feature request that I said I'd pass along...

Because of the volume of e-mail they get, they pay less heed (or assign less mental urgency) to Moodle posts by e-mail. But without ANY e-mail, they might never remember to visit the site. The solution they came up with to this seeming paradox was, in essence, a "ping-only" e-mail -- a note that says "there's something new," but doesn't provide the full content.

This particular idea doesn't, I confess, appeal much to me, but it did seem to resonate amongst the board members.

Does this seem reasonable to others?

Some of the mails are already like this (eg asignment notices) but have you seen the new digests?

Almost immediately after posting the note, I played with the new digest feature, which I think will go a long way toward addressing their concern. My sense, though, is that their issue is not with volume, however, but content. So the interest is more in non-digest subject-only notices -- essentially the normal e-mail, but defenestrated. wink

Probably the new "read/unread" flags will do the trick then ... once I get it in!

Has this option been explored further? I use Moodle for a corporate site, and I have been requested to have forum posts sent as "pings" only for security reasons. Is is somehow possible to have the forum send out a simple "Please log in to view post in context" message, rather than the full text? It would also be great if there were an option to just sent the "short post" content, then you could simply set the short post value very low to allow for only one introductory sentence... In this instance, it would also be helpful to be able to set the short post value on a per course, or per forum basis...
Any ideas?
