I can't seem to find a method to remove items from the Gradebook. Is it possible? For example, I tested grading a Database, but the grades are removed now. The Database activity is still in the Gradebook. There is no grading for it, nor any graded items, but I can only hide it (make it grey). There is a lot of clutter on the page already, so I'd like to be able to remove unneeded activities from the gradebook altogether.
How are items removed from the Gradebook without deleting them from the course?

Hi Samuli,
I've just tried updating a database activity which previously allowed rating and changed it to not allow rating, and found the same as you - the activity is still included in the gradebook. It seems that the only way is to delete the activity from the course. I assume this it to prevent grades data being lost accidentally.

Even if it's created with "no grading" it's still added to the gradebook, at least that was the case for the Assignment. But to me it seems that the "no grading" is indicating that it's not wished to be in the Gradebook.
The grades could still be left (I'm not sure if they are, if the grading options is changed), but the activity does not have to be visible in the Gradebook. It could then re-appear if the grading is reintroduced.
A'ha, just noticed MDL-4559.

This is explained in this gradebook FAQ.

Aaa, you could've written "This is now explained..."
But anyway, I still don't feel they should be in the gradebook, as the gradebook is a suboptimal way to give the text feedback. Some of our teachers are using the Assignment to gather text feedback from the students, and then the teachers are giving feedback to the students. The texts in those assignments are quite large.
Is it a technical limitation that they have to be in the gradebook also? Or is it thought to be a usability factor, that the non-graded items are in gb? If it's just a technical thing, then the technical solutions should not be forced upon the users. I'm not saying that the non-graded items in the gb can't be of any use, but I'm just not sure it's convenient to edit or view the text feedback via the gb.

The fact is that grades and feedback are being recorded in the gradebook database tables since 1.9. This isn't going to change, and it's very good this way. The issue, as you point it out, is of usability and convenience. We need to make it convenient and useful for teachers to enter and present text feedback using the gradebook interface. Currently the tiny little input boxes in the grader report are far from adequate, and I've been working on an AJAX interface to improve this (it's been in CVS HEAD for a few months now).
