Add a new discussion topic button missing

The 'Add a new discussion topic' button is missing on my Site News as admin. It was there last night when I went to bed and this morning it is gone. Weird!

I was fiddling with permissions last night, trying to create a new role. Undoubtedly I messed something up. I can't find my error. Anyone have an idea what I need to look for - or where - to restore the 'add a new discussion' button in Site News?

(We need a 'dunce' emoticon for when we mess up our moodle - & know it!) blush

I will assume at this time that the Administrator can perform other administration items. If not, then you may want to look at the system roles.

The first place you probably want to look is at your Front Page settings to check if you set Default Front Page role to guest or if you made any assignments in the Front Page Roles.

Then check the Front Page override permissions to see if you changed the administrator permissions. They should all be Inherit.

The next place to look is at the forum settings itself for Locally Assigned Role and Override permissions.

Hope that helps.

Ron

Thanks, Ron for replying. There's a lot in your response, so I'm taking it step-by-step. I have listed in blue the settings on my moodle.

Admin can do anything on site
System Roles - 1 admin

The first place you probably want to look is at your Front Page settings to check if you set Default Front Page role to guest or if you made any assignments in the Front Page Roles.
Front Page settings
Default role - set to Guest
Front Page roles - 1 admin

Then check the Front Page override permissions to see if you changed the administrator permissions. They should all be Inherit.
Front Page Override Permissions - none; everything set by default

The next place to look is at the forum settings itself for Locally Assigned Role and Override permissions.
Forum settings - admin all inherit

Unfortunately, the 'Add new discussion' button still is missing. I need this feature restored as there are items to be added to the site.

Any other suggestions?

Still having this problem. I have items to add to Site News before tomorrow when classes begin again. I need some help getting the 'Add a new discussion' button back on the Front Page Site News.

I have checked everything Ron suggested. My findings are listed above.

This is a faculty moodle so admin & student(faculty) roles have permission to Start New Discussions in news forums & Reply to news posts.

I have lost the button in all instances. I'm willing to check code is someone will help me.

Hi Myrrh,

The default front page role should never be set to guest. It should be set to either "None" or "Student" (if you want logged-in users to participate in front page activities).

Don't worry, you're not the first person to ask this question. You'll notice it's included in the Forum module FAQ. wink

Thanks, Helen.
I reset the role to "None" and it now works the way I want. But now I have a new problem. The Front Page summary doesn't show up. I have NO clue why this has happened. Regardless of the role, admin, guest, student, etc - nothing. I'm not even aware of any permissions that affect this.

Any ideas?

The Summary can be set to hidden and it can be deleted. If you turn on editing on the Front Page and do not see the Course/Site Description block, then you will need to add it back on.

Hi Myrrh,

Did changing the default Front Page role help?

Hi Ron,
I did change the Front Page role back to None and that fixed the problem. Thank you for your time & suggestions.

Yes, it helps me.
I lost the 'Add a new topic' button on the front page news forum and desperately hunting for it for hours. Until I found your Q&A here.

I have to log out and log in again to see it works. smile

Thanks
