Why at least three items in matching question?

Hi,

I am running Moodle 1.9.2 on a Linux box.

Question:
Why must there be at least three items in a "matching" question?

Background:
I am creating grammar questions for a language course.

I want to show the students a sentence such as "The boy and his sisters saw a movie". For each noun in the sentence, the student must say if that noun is singular or plural.

This works very well with "matching" questions. For each noun (boy, sisters, and movie in the above example), the student gets to choose between "singular" or "plural". This is perfect as long as there are at least three nouns in the sentence. But if there are only two or one, this type of question cannot be used. Instead, I must use multiple choice (for one noun) or cloze type questions (for one or two nouns), which I don't want to do because I really like the layout of "matching" questions.

So, why is there a lower limit of 3 on the number of items? Is this just an arbitrary limit, or are there technical reasons for having it?

Cheers,
Claus
