Variety in questions is a good point, I hadn't thought of that. I read your paper Brian, makes for interesting reading, I got around the 'many students in a computer room' problem by reverting to a paper test, only took me about a minute to mark each question so I abandoned the PC room.

I have read a lot of quizzes where the authors have used fancy question types but have managed to only test facts, not high level knowledge. I think this is where my distrust of many question types comes from, there is a whole lot of guidance out there on how to write good quiz questions and I get the feeling authors reach for exotic question types before learning the basics of quiz question design, for example, how to write good feedback.
