We have seen this problem arise again with a couple courses, I will ask Remote Learner for the actual code they ran and post it here.

We started with the Newbury theme, changed Css, and images, added a date script, then worked on finding a way center float the center bocks. I believe page menu has the ability to do that. We are trying to find a way around the core code hack. If you notice Yahoo's page, they use Ajax in some of their center blocks, and that is something we are playing with now. Newbury's theme seemed to have the closest resemblance to Yahoo's anatomy.
This theme was based on the Newbury/Moodle main theme and Yahoo.com. You can change colors and flash logos are allowed. We are working out the bugs but will offer it to the general moodle community soon. Here are some screenshots. Notice like the page menue themes blocks on the front page can be placed in the center content area! We are still working out some minor CSS errors but should have this ready soon!WE currently have 7 color variations under change theme. We did have to edit core code in order to get the blocks to move to center but its easy to implement.
Here is another color variation available under change theme.
They are talking about the Show course blocks checkbox in the "compose webpage" item under resources. The problem is this will show all blocks without the special OU code. See attached Screen Shot
