Exactly whch version of Moodle are you using. Around Moodle 4.0 time we greatly increased the logging of students attempting quizzes (MDL-71984). (That was done during Covid, when the Open University where I work started doing a lot more online exams, and we found we needed this.) Also, when you review a quiz attempt, the response history lets you see when the answer to each question was input.

It is never possible to work out exactly what happened, but there is a lot of information there to help you.

Well, the learning outcome for a course rarely says "Must be able to answer Moodle drag-drop questions".

A more likely learning outcome is "Must be able to identify cancerous cells in a tissue sample".

To assess a learning outcome like that, when working with sighted students, a drag-drop question, with an image a microscope slide is one of the best way to assess it.

For non-sighted users/practitioners, their whole approach would be different, so the assessment would be different.

So, these question types are a useful tool. They should stay in Moodle. You do need to think before using them - about what you are acutally trying to assess.

Why are you asking about alt text? That was built in from the start

You just need to use it (in a way that helps people who need it, without giving away the answer).

This is not currently a feature that exists.

It could be done. This other, similar, feature request was done: MDL-35745 (ability to re-open attempts that were Never submitted because time ran out.)

A feature request for what you want was raised years ago: MDL-24814. It just needs someone with the resources to get it done.

Here is another thing that won't solve your problem: https://moodle.org/plugins/availability_quizquestion. I was involved with a group at MoodleMoot DACH 6 years ago, who created that during a 2-day DevCamp. Sadly, it then got broken by the question bank changes in Moodle 4.0, and no-one has managed to fix it.

But, it occurs to me, it might be equally easy to create a new availability_quizsectionscore plugin along simiar lines. (Hopefully it is obvious from the name what that might do.)

Other options would be:

  1. do the work to fix availability_quizquestion
  2. do the work to (optionally) get the quiz section grades into the gradebook.

Sorry that I did not see this until now. I have been having a very busy week.

To know what is going on, we would really need to see the task logs output for the tasks that have failed. There is likely to be useful information there.
