Afterburner is based on the GPL Joomla theme of the same name that was created by Rocket Theme. It includes the YUI dropdown menu, and automatically pulls the logged in user's courses into the "My Courses" dropdown. I've also used a table in the wrapper to stop unwanted layout-table overflow. Furthermore, conditional PHP is used in this theme to keep wrappers and backgrounds out of popup windows. Here it is in the database: http://moodle.org/mod/data/view.php?d=26&rid=3555

A couple days ago, I committed a new theme called Fusion to the Moodle 2 core. It's different from any theme I've ever created. The heading is embedded in the content section. It has a custom menu bar with a slight glitch that I still need to work out.

With this being a completely different Moodle theme design, I'd like your help testing it as early as possible. If you have the time, please grab the most recent version of 2.0 from CVS and give it a whirl. Feel free to post questions here and issues to the Tracker.

NewSchool Learning received 12 theme submissions from 11 contestants for the Moodle 2.0 Theme Contest. I've created a space for you to preview, download, rate, and comment on all of the themes that have been submitted. Here it is:

Regarding the ratings: We considered several different rating systems before settling on this one. Each system has its pros and cons. This one included. Please take time to look at the themes before using the rubric to rate the themes.

If you have an understanding of the Moodle 2 theme engine, please download and review the source code. Your scrutiny and feedback will greatly help strengthen the themes and developers' skills.

I'm still working on the demo site. Since I started with a clean 2.0 installation, it's still a bit empty. If you have a 2.0 test course that you'd like to share, please do. Still, the best way to see these themes is to download them for use on your local test installation.

Don’t forget that we’re buying the developer of the theme with the highest community rating, the tightest code, and the most creative use of the Moodle 2.0 theme engine a brand new 16GB iPad. Plus, the best themes will all be included in the Moodle 2.0 core. The stakes are high. Please take your time reviewing these themes and ask the developers questions in the submission comment area if you have any.

I’m pleased to announce that NewSchool Learning is taking submissions for a Moodle 2.0 Theme Contest that starts today. Since full contest rules and selection criteria can be found on the contest page, I won’t bother repeating that information here. I will say, though, that we’re giving away a new 16GB Wi-Fi iPad to the contest winner, which will be announced on July 16, 2010.

The goals of this competition are to:

• encourage community members to learn the new Moodle 2.0 theme engine. A lot (everything) has changed in the way themes are rendered from 1.x to 2.0. Every theme created for Moodle 1.x will have to be recoded for 2.0. We need an active and knowledgeable community of theme developers to ensure the successful use of this new and powerful theme engine.
• highlight how great Moodle 2.0 can look by selecting 20 themes to be included inside every Moodle 2.0 download. The new theme engine provides developers with a lot more flexibility than they had with Moodle 1.x.
• spark innovation through competition. I think the 2.0 release represents a great opportunity to increase the appeal of Moodle by allowing developers to create a more diverse collection of themes. Let’s make Moodle beautiful together!
