Hi,

I would just like to second the points Urs makes about jQuery being mainstream and productive. It would be a big help to theme developers such as myself if Moodle supported jQuery. It would help theme developers to more quickly and easily develop features and functionality.

I am not a backend programmer so I cannot comment on just how much of a technical challenge this would be. However, I can appreciate that there are perhaps significant technical challenges and overheads for the Moodle development team to do this. If at all possible though I would urge that Moodle be developed to facilitate the use of jQuery for the very clear reasons Urs has set out.

So my questions would be:

1) Just how much of a challenge would it be to allow Moodle theme developers the choice to use JQuery?

2) Beyond the technical overhead of achieving this, is there any other reason not to offer Moodle themers the choice to use jQuery?

Hi Jerome,

Many thanks for taking the time to share this. Both your explanation and your screencast are very helpful and useful. So many people find the naming of meta courses and child courses confusing (including me!).

Hopefully someone with common sense will re-evaluate the current bizarre naming when Moodle 2.0 comes around.

Hi Shaun,

Thanks for all of your work on Aardvark.

With regard to Lightbox I think Chris was referring to the JQuery lightbox plugin.

http://leandrovieira.com/projects/jquery/lightbox/

jQuery lightBox plugin is simple, elegant, unobtrusive, no need extra markup and is used to overlay images on the current page through the power and flexibility of jQuery´s selector.

With regard to CSS the single best book I have read is

CSS: The Missing Manual by David McFarland

I am now half way through his book on JavaScript

JavaScript: The Missing Manual by David McFarland

Incidentally the JavaScript book starts with IE & Mozilla JavaScript but then focusses on the use of JQuery. It covers the lightBox plugin pretty comprehensively.

Both books are in my opinion exceptional in their clarity of explanation. As far as CSS / XHTML goes I have read about 10 books (incl O'Reilly ones) over the years and David McFarland's is the best!

PS I don't have shares in the Missing Manual series, JQuery or in David McFarland ; )

PPS My next JQuery step will be:

Learning JQuery 1.3 (Paperback)
