Hi again Kimberley. If you have ftp access, then at the very least take a look at the moodle files and see if you can see similarities in the dates when they were last altered - when I had a wordpress site hacked for example, a load of files had the same date with a minute or so between them. These will be files that have code injected into them and need it taking out. Try just looking at the config. php file first -take out all the references to california real estate etc and try saving again. To be in with a chance of getting your Moodle to work properly you would have to go through all the files that appear to have been edited (ie hacked) at around the same time of day, resave and then see how your Moodle worked. But to be honest you really need to install a completely new "clean " version of Moodle and that is why I linked to the docs on hacked site recovery, showing you how to do it.

Kimberley - do you have ftp access to all the Moodle files on your server? Did you install the Moodle or did someone else?
Wow! You certainly are talking my language here, Tom
(as a language teacher and Moodle fan!) First of all - Moodle lends itself really well to ESL and other language teaching. You can do what you want -the correcting homework on Moodle in different coulours/strikethrough etc etc by using the "online text assignment" where , if you tick "comment inline" you get a copy of the students' work that you can type over AND the original untouched so when they get your grade they can see their work and your corrections.
It is entirely private between you and the student. However - you can also use other things like forums for sharing resources and chatting between students -these would be visible to all however, but for collaborative work, that would be good. What age are your pupils? There is a book out in October on Moodle for teaching languages - it might be useful to you.
I could go on -and on

Further to what Frances says, I could tell you which modules I like but it often depends on your institution type, subject and age of your students really as to which are preferable. My school is for ages 11 -16. I like the questionnaire/feedback modules (for student voice, evaluation) and the Book module (for easy presentation of work) and the certificate module (for motivation)and I know some people like the criterion reference block for marking certain types of exam courses. Also worth checking nanogong/audio recorder as an alternative to typing. And , of what is included in Moodle itself, HotPotatoes has great potential at all ages and levels of ability.
