Hi Helen - yes, I though it ought to work "out of the box" especially as I've got a phpmyadmin folder. I'll keep investigating.

thanks. I mean - if the worst came to the worst I could always delete and start again but then - like the pupils- I won't have learned anything,as this is my weakest area of Moodle. Not able to do much today (unless my mobile broadband dongle works on the train) as I am off to BETT

apache. I just downloaded the moodle 2 for windows from the downloads tab -thought it had everything in it already you see - then I broke it so I'm trying to access the database to fix it

Well -I failed on the first hurdle - tried this one http://www.trap17.com/index.php/installing-phpmyadmin-local-machine-windows_t63977.html
and it said extract to htdocs -where's that? Do they mean in my moodle folder? in the server folder? Or in one of the folder within there?

I will give it a go now!
