I have used replace.php without any problems, but I will point out that the breadcumbs that get you to this file are Administration ► Unsupported ► Search and replace.

That is a little scarey.

You may already be aware of this, but you can do a search and replace from http://YOURSITE/admin/replace.php

This does not fix the absolute URL problem, I know, but it may at least save you some time.

Hmmm... Well, how about this?

1. When you set up the quiz, allow unlimited attempts.
2. For "Each attempt builds on the last," choose "Yes."
3. When creating quiz items, create helpful feedback for missed questions.

I think that should get you pretty close to what you want.

Anyone else want to take a shot at this? Maybe someone has a more elegant approach?

Click on the "Settings" link in the admin menu and you will be able to change the number of weeks or topics that appear in the middle column.
