Good post! I have nothing to add, except that many people might not know where to get information about apache, mysql, etc. If they are on a shared server, they might have access to cpanel. In that case, they can just look on the left for the info. (attached)
Where can they get this if they do not have a control panel?

No, I wish that were the case. But that does not mean that I am doing everything right. I assume that this sort of problem is user error and I am usually right. 
I have attached a little Flash movie. You can see the page refreshing, but that's all that happens. But maybe you can see me doing something wrong.
