You could probably have Excel generate a random password and then make some sort of mail merge in Word for each student.
That sounds like a good plan, Todd. I guess I need to take a look at a couple of Excel tutorials.

Well, I do think it would encourage more of our teachers to use Moodle if we were able to tell them, Look, these kids are already in the system. Yes, all of them! Just go ahead and enroll them in your courses.
And if we were able to make students use their usernames instead of their real names while participating in forums, wikis, etc., we would have an added layer of privacy that some parents seem to want. That presumes, of course, that we lock certain fields in their profiles. A genuine pity, but probably necessary in our current environment.

I do wonder if this is not something we could simply build into the admin interface, though: Click here to generate X number of new accounts.
It seems like a good idea to me, but I do not want to file it as a feature request if no one else thinks so.

I don't want to get into this, myself, but I do hope that the conversation around this legitimate topic will be polite, respectful, reasonable and informative - educational, even. 
I know that education is sometimes confrontational and that people become very passionate about some issues (rightfully so), but this sort of thing can be positive or negative for the community. It's up to all of us to try to choose the former and not the latter.
Maybe I will learn something from this thread or will even be able to use parts of it for the intercultural training we do with our American exchange students.
That would be in keeping with the tolerant, open-minded spirit of this global community and with my experiences in this community since September of 2002.
