Thank you for your post, Bridget! It is helpful to know how useful the chat module has been in your classes.

I have had some success when scheduling a chat the night before a big test. In my case, chat works great as long as there are not too many in the chat room at one time.

Are there any other course components that seem especially useful or important to you? Not necessarily modules. Simply stuff you consider really important to include in the course.

And it's working perfectly on my up-to-date installation of Moodle. It's only a problem for me in 1.9.4.

In scenario one, I think you could just use the advanced uploading of files assignment to do all that. Check it out here -- http://docs.moodle.org/en/Advanced_uploading_of_files_assignment

That should work if you meant to present the essay just to the student who wrote it, not to the whole class.

In scenario two, I think you could still use the advanced uploading of files assignment. The student would write the first essay in course one. Then you would import the activity from course one into course two.

If you enroll the students via a file upload, this will not be a problem.
