Hmmm... Didn't think that would prevent the admin going to the profile page [moodle/user/edit.php?id=xyz&course=xyz] and changing the password, but have not tried it out. Bummer.
I am surprised that it is not possible simply to lock the password field.

Hi,
Just guessing here, but for students to change their own passwords, they must access moodle/login/change_password.php?id=xyz, right?
What about simply changing permissions on that file to something like 400 to make it inaccessible to students? Or doing the same to the form that they use to change passwords? Would that not work?
