In short, you are in Moodle 4.1.6 and waiting for your host to upgrade it? To what version?

Moodle 4.1, being an LTS, is not a bad version to be in. It received its final updates (security patches) on 8 December 2025. But that release was tagged 4.1.22. Moodle 4.1.6 was from 9 October 2023. So your immediate action should be the update 4.1.6 > 4.1.22, which does not require any system software (Apache, PHP, MySQL) change! Ref. https://moodledev.io/general/releases. The documentation is here https://docs.moodle.org/401/en/Upgrading.

Similarly, when you upgrade, if you go to the next LTS, which is Moodle 4.5, you will win time for the next upgrade. For an overview of the upgrade march, refer the already linked http://www.syndrega.ch/blog/#php-and-dbms-compatibility-of-major-moodle-releases.

The server requirements of Moodle 4.1 are listed here https://moodledev.io/general/releases/4.1.

Whether you can upgrade, it is always an option. Check the requirements of the target version similarly, e.g. https://moodledev.io/general/releases/4.5.

Upgrading must jump from one stable Moodle to another stable Moodle. An unstable Moodle will somehow stabilize after the upgrade doesn't happen.

Documentation pages like https://docs.moodle.org/401/en/Upgrading, https://docs.moodle.org/405/en/Upgrading explain how to upgrade.

If you plan a long march, consult the chart http://www.syndrega.ch/blog/#php-and-dbms-compatibility-of-major-moodle-releases beforehand.
