CHAPTER IV

The Rabbit Sends in a Little Bill

She waited for some time without hearing anything more: at last came a rumbling of little cartwheels, and the sound of a good many voices all talking together: she made out the words: `Where's the other ladder?--Why, I hadn't to bring but one; Bill's got the other--Bill! fetch it here, lad!--Here, put 'em up at this corner--No, tie 'em together first--they don't reach half high enough yet--Oh! they'll do well enough; don't be particular-- Here, Bill! catch hold of this rope--Will the roof bear?--Mind that loose slate--Oh, it's coming down! Heads below!' (a loud crash)--`Now, who did that?--It was Bill, I fancy--Who's to go down the chimney?--Nay, I shan't! You do it!--That I won't, then!--Bill's to go down--Here, Bill! the master says you're to go down the chimney!'

`Oh! So Bill's got to come down the chimney, has he?' said Alice to herself. `Shy, they seem to put everything upon Bill! I wouldn't be in Bill's place for a good deal: this fireplace is narrow, to be sure; but I think I can kick a little!'

"There goes Bill!"She drew her foot as far down the chimney as she could, and waited till she heard a little animal (she couldn't guess of what sort it was) scratching and scrambling about in the chimney close above her: then, saying to herself `This is Bill,' she gave one sharp kick, and waited to see what would happen next.

The first thing she heard was a general chorus of `There goes Bill!' then the Rabbit's voice along--`Catch him, you by the hedge!' then silence, and then another confusion of voices--`Hold up his head--Brandy now--Don't choke him--How was it, old fellow? What happened to you? Tell us all about it!'

Last came a little feeble, squeaking voice, (`That's Bill,' thought Alice,) `Well, I hardly know--No more, thank ye; I'm better now--but I'm a deal too flustered to tell you--all I know is, something comes at me like a Jack-in-the-box, and up I goes like a sky-rocket!'

`So you did, old fellow!' said the others.

Indeed the Moodle package your installed is meant for a single computer. At most you can reach other computers in the local network (LAN) your are in. That could be a classroom, your office or a whole building. Not more. You should make $CFG->wwwroot='http://IPADDRESS'; and run the Search and replace tool. This assumes your local firewall doesn't interfere. Talk to the IT of your institution.

For obvious reasons, our computers ("desktops") are not reachable from the Internet. We reach the Internet, not the other way. If you want to make your Moodle site available to the whole Internet you have to "host" it. Pl. see Finding and Selecting A Web Host.

Moosh could be the key. Why didn't I think of it!

At the center of it are lines like this one, a line per plug-in, which Moosh prints out:

mod_checklist,2.0,2.1,2.2,2.3,2.4,2.5,2.6,2.7,2.8,2.9,3.0,3.1,3.10,3.11,3.2,3.3,3.4,3.5,3.6,3.7,3.8,3.9,4.0,4.1,4.2,4.3,4.4,4.5,https://moodle.org/plugins/download.php/33532/mod_checklist_moodle45_2024101900.zip

The example above is the ideal one. The Moodle plug-in database confirms that mod_checklist is Moodle 4.5 LTS compatible.

Let's take different example:

tool_emailutils,3.10,3.11,3.9,4.0,4.1,4.2,4.3,https://moodle.org/plugins/download.php/31410/tool_emailutils_moodle43_2024011502.zip

It says that tool_emailutils is Moodle 4.3 compatible. But it doesn't say that it is incompatible with 4.5 LTS, for example. In the forum discussions one hears over and over that a missing later version simply means that the developer hasn't tested it against that version. It could be compatible.

Now how do we move further? Do we search the forum for that plug-in (Where is it: The main page of the plug-in database? The GitHub page? The website of the developer? The corresponding forum on moodle.org? Or the General plugins forum?) and, if found to be 4.5 LTS compatible or not compatible, mark it as such in our spread-sheet?

And what if we find neither nor? Try the latest of that plug-in?

And each of the user go through the procedure above?

That doesn't sound like a happy world. Could you (or some other person) pl. confirm?

Yeah, a cleaning *before* the big upgrade makes sense. Perhaps part of it will be forced, since the plug-ins don't exist anymore.

Good to know that there is a safety network, in case we run against a road block. ;)
