> 400 - 4.0

What is the middle 0 for? I think it is meant for two digit "generations", like
410 - 41.0
411 - 41.1

But that suggests,
400 - 40.0
401 - 40.1
which are not.

I'm going in circles!

Just kidding, see https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=457946#p1873487. That discussion is over for me (and for the developers).

After discussing a couple of such wishes, some of my own, I came to the conclusion that Moodle HQ does not want give each version its fair chance, rather to push the latest version at any cost. I could search for the evidence on a couple of forums here - Why waste time? The answer was always No (or silence)!

"unknown" things may happen if the basis software, basically if PHP and DBMS, do not match with Moodle anymore. Compare https://moodledev.io/general/releases/2.8.

Notice that there are _max_ versions too. Ref. http://www.syndrega.ch/blog/#php-and-dbms-compatibility-of-major-moodle-releases.

Otherwise Moodle 2.8 has not been updated since 2.8.12 from 9 May, 2016.

>> The command to run composer presumes your Moodle folder is owned by www-data

This is a part of an exercise to _improve_ server security? The web server gets write permissions in its document root. Defies my logic. But if the developers say so, it must be right.
