Totally agree with your previous post, especially your conclusion "IMHO it is student centered to have the choice about subscribing available but to have a default towards not subscribing to forums."

> Martin

Thanks for reminding us about the Forum auto-subscribe setting in User Profile!

>Przemyslaw

"What I usually do is to go to the mdl_user table and change the default of the autosubscribe field to 0 (zero)" : a commendable initiative!

I'm using the Topics Format for my courses.

When a student navigates through the various activities, the drop-down list in the upper right corner displays available activities under the ----Topic 1----, ----Topic 2---- headings.

I would like (as a Teacher) to be able to rename those pretty meaningless headings to headings of my own choice.

Suggestion: add an "edit Topic name/title" button (similar to the existing "edit summary" button). Then that new topic title would appear in the drop-down navigation list instead of ----Topic 1----, etc.

Thanks!

Hi Brent, Michelle and W Page.

I am also frustrated that Moodle does not offer an internal e-mail system (contrary to e.g. WebCT).

Because of the increasing amount of  spam teachers (& students) are getting, at my institution the faculty certainly do not want to make their regular e-mail address available anywhere on an e-learning platform.

One attractive alternative to an internal e-mail system might be - as suggested by Michelle - to use the Dialogue Module. However, to make it a workable alternative to e-mail the following two functions would have to be made available:

  • opening a dialogue with a selected number of students at a time, not just one (there exist a number of circumstances when a teacher wants to send out a message to some, not all of the students in the class);
  • attaching attachments to messages (cf. Junaid Haroon's message http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=2817&parent=12864);

Ray, thanks for making this Dialogue Module available. You said in an earlier message "I really don't want to take this module too far. I suspect your needs are going to be met by using group based forums." I don't think the availability of group based forums would take this Dialogue Module into the direction wished by some Moodle users (including myself), i.e. as a credible surrogate for an internal mail system. However I'd be interested in your comments on my suggestions.
