Sorry, but it does depend on the question type.
You wrote "So a 3 mark question (with 33% penalties) has -1, -2 applied at try 2 and 3 respectively. The problem is when you have partial marks coded. So I have one example where a student, on her 3rd try, got an answer that would have scored 2/3 if she gave it on her 1st try. The penalty though meant she scored 0, even though she actually worked out a 'valid' answer. My original thought was that the adaptive mode would give 2/3 - 66%, which is 0.68/3."

Please export that question and attach it to your next post so I can try it out.

Lorsqu'on fait un upgrade de la 3.10 vers la 4.0 un message avertit très clairement qu'il ne sera pas possible de revenir en arrière.

@Don,

I know of Gordon's essayautograde question type. Oliver Tacke has also created a kind of autograde Essay H5P activity. I expect the auto-grade feature can have its uses in real-life teaching, although I tend to be skeptical of the "grade" thus given/obtained.

On the other hand I would favour such Essay features that would include:

a) the display of word-count (as per Dominique's suggestion in this discussion);
b) some kind of feedback which would tell the student whether they managed or forgot to use certain keywords, or made some (previously recorded by the teacher) mistakes... with a chance to re-submit their Essay after amending it, of course.

The second feature needs some kind of "answer analysis".
