Hi all,

Using Moodle 2.0.1+ (Build: 20110209).

Further to this discussion in the Lesson forum I have either found out a serious bug in the Activities-Groupings feature in Moodle 2.0 or I am missing an obvious setting somewhere.

  1. At site level I have enabled Experimental settings : Enable group members only.
  2. At course level I have left all the Group settings at their default value
  3. In my course I have created
    • Grouping Birds:
      • Group Eagles student01
      • Group Sparrows: student02 student04
    • Grouping Jungle
      • Group Lions:student03
  4. In any one instance of these activities: Glossary, Lesson, Quiz, in the Common module settings Advanced, I select Grouping: Birds; Available for group members only.
  5. The Topic list of activities correctly shows e.g.:
    • my first quiz (Birds)
    • Lesson my first lesson (Birds)
    • Glossary New Course Glossary (Birds)
  6. I log out and log in as student01 (Group Eagles, Grouping Birds)...
  7. All the activities which I have set Available for Grouping Birds are not visible to student01. And they are not visible to students of any other Group/Grouping either!

I'd be grateful if those moodlers who are currently testing Moodle 2.0 would try to reproduce my scenario and either confirm the bug (so I can report it in the tracker) or point to an error in my procedure.

Luis:

1.- "When I create from scratch a new lesson, a page with a number of settings appears (this page is what I called "edit settings page"). In the last group of settings (common module settings) I click on the button "show advanced", it appears the options of grouping, choose "available for group members only" and then the group. After finishing creating the lesson, students in the chosen group work on it."

OK. In Moodle 1.9 and 2.0 we have the option "Groupings", but we do not have the "Group mode" option (see comparison with the Quiz activity on attached screenshot. So you can make a Lesson only visible and doable by a certain grouping of students... but you cannot have "separate" viewing of results because the "Group mode" (No groups/Separate Groups/Visible Groups) options...

2.- "Checking the attempts: the activity is visible on the gradebook with the grades of the students that already finished the lesson.  I click on the name of the lesson in the column heading to check the attempts, and here is when the message of "no attempts made" shows up (even though all the students of the group finished the lesson)."

I am confused by your scenario. If you want to check the attempts made by your students on a Lesson, why do you go to the gradebook? This is not necessary, just go to the Lesson and click on the Reports tab.

3.- Actually, there does seem to be a bug in Moodle 2.0, affecting the way that an activity (Quiz, Lesson, etc.) is only visible to the members of a Grouping. Please, can you check that if you set your Lesson to be available to the members of one of your course Groupings only that Lesson is indeed visible when logged in as a member of that Grouping? On my moodle 2.0 test site, in that scenario, it is not visible.

Hi Luis,

Thanks for mentioning the Groups/Groupings feature.

As far as I can see there is no Group mode in the Lesson settings (either in version 1.9.x or 2.0). This explains that "I'm unable to see the attempts made in each group separately."

Merci Patrick de me signaler ça. C'est parce que je venais juste de faire quelques modifs dans la fiche et que, à chaque fois qu'on fait une modif. la fiche doit être "ré-approuvée" par les modérateurs (dont je ne fais pas partie).
