Frances Bell -
I am old enough to remember what was usually called pounds, shillings and pence- also florins, half crowns and a dim memory of farthings.  Guineas were used in pricing, long after guineas were no longer currency. Crowns and sovereigns were from a much earlier period.
I remember the calculations as being very complicated but my husband thinks that knowing the factors of 240 (number of pence in  pound) was very useful.
Each to his/her own!!
