I don't think you can (easily). Now you mention it, however, I'd be interested to see if anybody has a solution for this.

Because one day *something* will happen that forces you to upgrade (most likely some incompatibilities as other parts of the server get upgraded). At that point you will have an absolute nightmare on your hands. Upgrading Moodle from some ancient version can get very tricky.

As Leon notes... the only *proof* that something is enabled is via PHPInfo. The above is just the switch provided by your host.
