If (anybody) takes a backup it gets stored on the file server. If they download it then, I assure you, nobody deletes the server version. Backups are a big problem for file space management.

Again, if depends on your user's workflow and what you are concerned about.

As usual - it depends on your individual requirements. You absolutely HAVE to have some sort of "disaster recovery" backup - that's the main thing.

Individual course backups are something of a luxury. As you identify, they take a lot of space and need to justify their existence.

Generally... they don't. Automatic backups is an admin function.
