That was my point. They "Never submitted" / didn't finish, so there will be no grade available.

This is why having timed quizzes with automatic submission when the quiz times out is a good idea. Students forget the final step of submitting their quiz.

As it stands, Moodle is working as intended, the student did not finish and there is no grade in the output.

Are you *sure* they finished the quiz? It's actually marked as finished?

I think if there's anything you can do to generate a more helpful error message for the deprecated way of doing things it would be fantastic. Is just a warning for including externallib.php an option? The PHPUnit error meant absolutely nothing to me and Googling just added to the confusion. It took me the best part of 2 days to get to the bottom of the problem, that I won't get back. I imagine that other people are going to hit the same problem.

Can you change (back) to the core Boost theme and see if the problem goes away?

I've got auth_saml2 running in 4.4 with no issues at all...
