What you want is docker! mariadb, apache/nginx, redis plus your choice of reverse proxy all running in containers. It does work (I have it working) because you now have maximal flexibility. 

Now that should keep you out of trouble for a while...

As an aside, I'm also watching Moodle development go down the same route. The "pain of entry" is increasing. The developer documentation was never amazing (who likes writing docs?) but there's a slow creep of hard things that require a lot of effort to learn (and have limited docs). Worse, all this has to be backward compatible with all the previous (bad?) decisions. I'm being depressing and negative but I'm worried that I'm witnessing some form of entropy increasing.
