Going through SSL is really the way to go. I understand it can be a bit more expensive, but there are certificates to suit every need. Also, if you are doing this on behalf of an educational institution, they might have a site license for SSL certificates and may even help you set it up. Check with your tech guys.
If I was having anyone pay online, I'd want them to feel secure when they made a purchase. It gets things off on the right foot, and it's just smart business sense.
