I think I finally figured out one UTF-8 IX webhosting problem..

I've been having a bear of a time figuring this one out but I stumbled through it in my phpmyadmin section...
Originally I thought, because I have other php programs running on the site, it was the reason for the 1.9 to not install because it was asking me to only install in UTF-8 and the initial install would say I wasn't.
After going through databases and trying to see where it was coming from - etc etc.. I found that in IX webhosting particularly - even though I was starting from scratch with UTF-8 - somehow it was not at the database level.
I discovered how, in phpmyadmin, what to change and got it all to run on at least one new domain on the same server where all the databases are located.
Now please understand folks..
I am NOT savvy with mysql and phpadmin but i still figured it out - (god I'm proud of myself wide eyes
Sooo...If anyone needs help I think I can walk you through it - at least with IX webhosting.
Yay. This has been going on for months..
Now...to try to migrate and fix my original site to go from 1.7 to 1.9
and by the way...
Moodle ROCKS!

Kent,

Could you look at my other posting. I am not using any other php programs on my site although I have a bunch of html work. Not sure what the UTF issues are.

Thanks,
Jeff

KB,

Before you go around walking anyone through anything, pls be sure you understand the differences between
  1. the character set of a field and the collation of that field;
  2. the defaults of those properties for a field in a table;
  3. the defaults for a table (which apply to new fields added to that table);
  4. the defaults for a database (which apply to new tables in that database);
  5. the defaults for a connection (which apply to new databases created during that connection);
  6. the defaults for MySQL (which apply to new connections).
Then, read Moodle Tracker issue # MDL-11743 including all the comments.

Also, I recently found out one needs to avoid Moodle 1.7 like the plague, if at all possible. See

http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=97181#p429395
http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=97181#p429466

But, if you have no choice, I would recommend upgrading one major version at a time, i.e., to 1.8, then to 1.9.
