Random Short Answer--not working

Random Short Answer--not working

Has anybody else had issues with getting Random Short Answer questions to work. I used them all the time in 1.8 but in 1.9 I can't create new ones. All the imported ones work though. I can even go to the same category where I already have a random short answer question (created prior to the upgrade) and try and create another (now in 1.9) and I get an error message saying that there are no Short answer questions in that category. The category only has 10-14 questions in it and they are all short answer types.

Pierre, I didn't know roles had to be set to use Random Short Answer.

Here's the exact wording of the error message:
There are no short answer questions in the category that you chose ''. Choose a different category, make some questions in this category.

I'm not sure what the single quotation marks in the message means?

I added two more short answer questions to a category that had 9 short answer questions in it...taking it to 11. Then I selected random short answer; selected that same category and set the choices to 2 and I got the same error.

1) I can edit an old (imported) Random-short no problem (ie make it out of 2 choices instead of 10) and it works
2) I created a brand new category, created two new questions and tried Random and it didn't work either ()same error message)
3) I'm not sure I understand would be any different than number 2.

About the PS. comments
When the situation you described happens that error message is different:
There is/are only 8 short answer questions in the category that you chose 'Vocab 1.1'. Choose a different category, make some more questions in this category or reduce the amount of questions you've selected.

Actually the error messages are very similar. By comparing the two I can tell that in the first error message it's not recognizing the category where the Random shorts are in because all it returns is an empty single quote. This seems odd.

There is a thread here
http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=93201 that seems to discuss a similar problem. But I'm not sure.

Hi,

I seem to have the same problem and wondered how this was resolved?

I get the same error message with the inverted commas.

I looked at the test 1.9 Moodle (http://132.208.141.198/moodle_19 - ours is also 1.9) and noticed an extra "Current Category" heading in the Question Editing Screen at the top.

Current Category
Default for MOO_19 (35) Use This Category
and the normal category heading is now "Save in Category"

I created the quiz in my course from new, the short answer questions and their category prior to that, all in the same session. I also moved the questions to a different newly created category and they still don't work.

Be glad of any feedback.

Thanks

James
