Tim Hunt suggested to move the topic from MDL--13386 to the developer forum:

This is a fundamental question how to handle features that are definitly not working in stable versions of moodle.

I remember two features that didn't work since some time:
 - resource_allowlocalfiles
 - secure window in quiz module MDL-10612 and others

In my opinion such features should be disabled in code and not appear in the admin menu or the modules settings. If they appear there users think they can use the feature, but it didn't work.

It' will be better to disable the code and let the issue as unsolved in the tracker as reminder for further codings.

In the tracker discussion we all found that fixing will be better than disabling. But what about features that didn't work for a long time, nobody fix them in the next stable version?

Hi Ralf,

  • I agree about the removing of resource allowlocalfiles, a feature which, as far as I can remember, has never worked.sad
  • I do not use the quiz secure window so have no opinion about its usefulness.
  • I would add to the list of features to be removed the powerpoint import into lesson. Users keep complaining that this feature does not work properly; in the Lesson forum I have several times advocated its total removing from the Lesson module, see e.g. this post.

Joseph

Thanks, Joseph, for bringing up this point. However, I would advocate fixing the powerpoint import into the Lesson Module. That feature has been an attractive point of the Lesson Module for me. By adding questions in the lesson, you go beyond a one-way presentation. It is a poor man's flash module for making interactive lessons. Also, I am intrigued by the possibility of having students build lessons because they can build a powerpoint project on a topic, then quiz each other on their work.

In the forum you referred to, I agree with the poster who suggests that only images of Powerpoint slides be imported--simpler that way. Omit page numbers and other niceties.

Hi all,

Ralf Hilgenstock is right. If I will find a feature in the Moodle features list then I think it should work properly. It's a bad thing if I find a feature that I will use but this feature does not work.

I spent some hours for switching on the local files because our school uses an internet connection line DSL6000 (that means a download of 6 Megabits/s = 760 Kilobytes/s and an upload of 512 Kilobits/s = 64 Kilobytes/s). I wanted to put the bigger files like audio and video files into a local folder so that those files must not be loaded from the internet at school. After hours I gave up ... and I found that this feature does not work!!

Bad thing! Please switch of any feature in code that does not work. Nobody must try a feature that does not work!!

Ralf

I agree, in our local copy we removed the choice for secure Quiz-window from the interface. (and hope someone finds a solutionsmile)

I hesitate to do the same for other options like the price of a course, but all these local changes must be maintained by... yes me smile

It would be nice to have an interface where the admin could switch off all choices... with the danger that users switch to a VLE with more (read.. less hidden) options. So at least the options should be ON by default and the admin should answer at least five questions of the type `are you shure` before it becomes deactivated.

Another option is to make a warning screen for the user´.. ´in this system some user optons are switched of´  smile

Of course, if someone would only work out how to fix secure mode in the quiz .... It is a feature that a vocal minority seem to really care about. However, that sort of Javascript is specialist knowledge, and I know hardly anything about it. Anyway, I would rather spend time fixing the bug than removing the option.
