Congratulations to Martin and all the developers for version 1.9 of our favorite learning management system! big grin

I highly recommend ver. 1.9 for production servers in schools from now. My school has been using 1.9 beta4 for a month and very impressed with its speed and stability. I see no reason to hang onto 1.8 for another semester. This is the first Moodle release to go through 5 months of beta testing with features frozen to work out bugs. In the past, one month was the norm. So many of you with those memories may worry and think about continuing with old versions for a while. That is incorrect this time.

What am I most excited about? Consider the new question engine which improves...
  • categories shared across the site
  • linking to media files
  • use of questions in many kinds of modules
And from Japan, watch for some of the new modules coming out this month that are 1.9 compatible.
  • Self-study/Question-making Module by Hakodate Future University
  • Project Course Format by Sapporo Gakuin University
  • Project Module by Sapporo Gakuin University
Of course, there are a few things left for improvement--especially wikis, blogs, and audio recording. So we will be using external applications such as DekiWiki or VoiceThread, and a third party Blog for Moodle this year.

What are your plans for 1.9 deployment? What do you like best about this version? cool

Woohoo!
Milestones are neat ways to get everyone to look at the tool as a whole. The Question Engine example is a good one, IMHO. Would probably not have looked at it without Don's mention.
Let's hope the usual naysayers will have pleasant experiences in the transition. It's more efficient if everyone brings interesting ideas.

Don - The only reason I might hesitate to move a site from 1.8 to 1.9 mid year are the changes in the gradebook. For those who are used to Moodle 1.8 the increased number of options may be a bit overwhelming. For those getting started I would say 1.9 without hesitation is the way to go. I look forward to seeing these various tools you mentioned in contrib wink Let me know if there is anything I can do to support those efforts. Peace - Anthony

Mid-year? Much of the world begins its school year in March/April--at least if we consider Asia as a good part the world. Perfect for a 1.9 upgrade. Did we catch you with your Ameri-centric pants down? wink wink big grin big grin

P.S. Thanks, Anthony, for the reminder about contrib posting! Will take you up on that offer.

blush - Yes Don-san, I was speaking from an American perspective. I'm glad that the timing of the 1.9 release works well. Actually, for those who want some time to evaluate 1.9 before implementation, especially larger institutions that will implement over the summer (June or July), it is a convenient time here in the U.S. too. So my conclusion is that the release of 1.9 is great for everyone! big grin

Ditto the thanks to everyone! The quality control aspect of the development process should have a huge impact on the roll out.

I am definitely excited. Not only because of the feature improvements but also because I believe a lot of work has gone on behind the interface. My site administrator just asked me for my annual recommendation about a migration for one of our 1.5.3 servers big grin. Now that the beta tag is off, I am going to say go for 1.9.

Our 1.5.3 Moodle just gave us it's first sign of of old age, last week. So unlike other years, my site administrator is saying "now would be good". I am going to enjoy the culture shock of all those complicated looking user interface things like Gradebook, Roles and Question Bank. Perfect timing.

Best to All. And thanks again to the core team and all of us who do our little bits.

Chris
