CPU-hogging problems, anyone? (Help!)

I received this e-mail from the server admin for my site:

"In the last few days since installing the moodle update I've seen
several apache processes that appear to have been in endless loops, using up 100% of the CPU on the web server for hours before I killed them.

"Can you see if anyone else has seen something like this?"

I am not seeing references to this here in the forums but I might be missing them. Anyway... anyone running into this? Any advice? Is there information I should ask him for to report to you?

Our server is hosed at the moment and I think it's the same problem again, but the admin is sound asleep now so it will be hosed until morning, I guess. sad

My guess is that its probably not your problem. It sounds like a configuration error on the actual host machine. However, I haven't *ever* seen Apache pull a stunt like that so who knows.

If you look on Google then lots of people seem to report similar errors with arbitrary PHP scripts, but there seems to be no particular solution. This is not good news for you really. You will need to persuade your system admin to do some more work on this and try and find the source of the problem.

What do you mean by "I think its the same problem again". I take it this has happened before?

No, I meant that the server wasn't responding just then and so maybe it was the same problem the admin had been commenting on. Though as it turned out, he thought it was a completely different problem that day. smile

Hmm. I guess I'll let him know that we should try to troubleshoot it a bit more. Thanks!
