Encoding of Norwegian

Encoding of Norwegian

Hi all Norwegians (and other users of our beautiful language!),

The current encoding for Norwegian bokmål, no_NO, is obsolete and should, (in the near future?), be replaced by the correct one: nb_NO.

For various reasons the no_NO package will not be deleted, but it will no longer be maintained.

The switch to nb_NO poses a few problems:

1. Moodle installations running on servers that still use the obsolete no_NO for the Norwegian - bokmål locale (FreeBSD?) will not be able to show a calendar with the correct date formats, names of days and months etc. for Norwegian - bokmål (Actually, this change has already taken place.)

2. Text tagged as "no" with the multilang tag, will not be recognised as Norwegian bokmål. Today the problem is that you can use two kinds of tags for the same language. Quite confusing I'd say.

Are there other problems? Any strong opinions?

Once "nb" is set up: sites switching to "nb" who wish to delete the "no" language pack should not forget to:
  • make sure no user has "no" as default language on their profile (do some SQL hocuspocus to make sure)
  • site language is set to "nb"
  • multilang tags are changed to "nb"
  • realise that course backups or backups of the database with "no" will no longer restore properly
  • ... (please add if necessary...)
