Here is a video tutorial on how to hide blocks from guests. I feel like the sound might be a little distracting. If you think it is, I might try to record it again... Thanks for your time.

Hi Aaron,

First of all, your video stands out amongst the others by its clarity. Your speech is deliberately slow and well pronounced, which makes your video very accessible. Another good point is that you go through each point without skipping over key elements. We can see where you're clicking, and what you're doing at all times. This makes it easy to reproduce your actions.

Your video would have benefited from a small level of zoom, to make the text a little easier to read. Also, I'm not sure which method you chose for sound compression, but it cracks quite a bit. This doesn't distract too much though, I wouldn't worry much about it.

The main point that needs work is your time management. Two segments in particular are needlessly long, with no commentaries, and basically add nothing to the learning experience of the viewer. The first one is the logging in as administrator, which takes 15 seconds. You could easily do this in a couple of seconds, even if this means having a browser tab ready in advance with the admin already logged in.

The second segment is when you scroll down the permissions table. This takes a painful 14 seconds, at the end of which we could forgive the viewer for forgetting what you're scrolling down for smile You could just ctrl-pagedown to the bottom after explaining that this is what you're doing. Then don't forget to mention that you are clicking on the save button. It's not that obvious at this resolution.

If you reduce these two segments you will bring your total video time to around 3 minutes, which is perfect, and you will teach the same amount of material with added effectiveness. Nevertheless, pending a little more feedback here I'm quite happy to tag this task as complete for you. Well done!

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for your video tutorial on hiding blocks from guests. I agree with Nicolas that it's very clear and easy to follow. approve

However, the title of GHOP task 85 is "Record a video demonstrating how to hide a block from guests" rather than "....how to hide blocks from guests".

I think your video would be more useful for Moodle admins if you demonstrated how to hide only one block (perhaps on the site front page) by overriding permissions in the block, rather than how to hide all the blocks in a course. Doing so would also avoid the long course permissions table. wink How to hide a single block is a question which is occasionally asked here on moodle.org, but I've never come across anyone wanting to hide all the blocks in a course.

Another small suggestion: I noticed at the end of the video you said "If you have any further questions, please be sure to post them in the comments section below." Rather than suggesting that comments should be added to the YouTube page, which nobody is going to check regularly wink, how about suggesting that people visit moodle.org for help and support.

If you can implement my suggestions, as well as following Nicolas' time management advice, then I'm sure the resulting video will be a great help to Moodle admins.

Best wishes and thanks for participating in GHOP. smile

Hi everyone,

Sorry for not getting back sooner. I've looked over the feedback I've received and will post a new video shortly. I've decided to demonstrate how to hide a block from guests (makes more sense) and will try to clean up lag time. Also, I'll redirect questions to moodle.org. I'll be re-recording it today, and I'll try to post it tonight or Sunday morning. Thanks for all the help!

Aaron,

That's much better! You've kept all the good aspects of your original video, and improved it following the feedback you received. The only point that could have made a bit better would have been to zoom in a bit on some of the buttons or text you describe.

Anyway, I'm very impressed with your video, and you get my 2 thumbs up!

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for improving your video on hiding a block from guests. Your video is so helpful, I doubt any Moodle admins will need further help, though I'm glad you suggest they visit www.moodle.org if they have any questions! approve

I've added a link to your video in the block permissions documentation.

Also, I'm going to move this discussion to the blocks forum so that more people know about your video.

Well done for successfully completing GHOP task 85. smile
