In another discussion, Jason Cole wrote

When the new groups system is in place ... you will be able to assign roles and capabilities to groups, rather than individuals. So you will simply need to create a new group for each set of capabilities.

(this was in August 2007). I was just wondering if "roles for groups" is currently under development, or if it's planned for some future release.

I think that the idea has been dropped.

The most I would expect to see now is some improvements to the roles assign page, to make make groups available as one of the ways you can more easily select people to assign roles to.
