Bulk upload of significant dates??

Bulk upload of significant dates??

Hello!

Is there a way to create an interface which would allow the bulk upload of dates. Something like GIFT for quizes and the file for uploading users in bulk to a site?

This function should probably be determined by "level of control" ->> Main Admin, admins, teachers,/instructors, students (??).

It would allow for bulk upload of the following calendar dates,
  • holidays
  • school holidays, school breaks, sports events, club/organization meeting dates, PTA meetings, special school events.
  • dates of national exams
  • dates of teacher's professional days
  • Season Changes smile
  • Moon Changes approve
  • Tide Changes big grin
  • etc.
Of course the manual way of adding dates would be maintained so individual events could be added, edited or deleted.

Possibly (depending on Martin's benevolence) similar to language packs, files with the holidays or significant dates for different countries, faiths, MUGs smile (local, national and international) could be maintained (listed by locality, country, educational organization, etc..) at a spot in Moodle.org so folks would not have to create them all the time from "scratch". They could just customize them.

What are other peoples thoughts about this?

Let me get this... you would like to add the same date to all calendars (every course)?

This can be done currently by adding a "global event."  This adds the event to all calendars and can be done by the site admin(s).

Hope this helps.

Hi Jeff!

No, I mean something more as well as different.  We can upload site/course users in bulk.  It would be nice to be able to also upload holidays, special school dates etc at once and not input them via a form one at a time.  In the user upload we can even upload students to a specific course and group.  This would also be useful for the calendar as well.

Hi,

as a reference only, perhaps rfc 2445 format should be supported. Tons of products are compatible with it (Apple iCal, MS Outlook, Sun Calendar Server...

And currently PHP iCalendar is a php implementation (Open Source!) working with that format, where we can look for a lot of info (not need to reinvent the wheel, isn't it?).

Hi Eloy,

The links you provide are great. Very informative... thanks! smile

However, this could be quite a lot of work (I won't know until I tackle it), so while it would be definitely nice to have this feature, it won't happen soon. Maybe sometime during the summer there will be time to work on this. Unless someone wants to try it sooner, of course.

Cheers
Jon

Is there any update to this request in the last year and a half?  Sounds like a great idea.  And my school wants something like this.

I just successfully tested a php script that bulk uploads a comma delimited text file into a MySQL database.  I need to Moodle-ize this script, and set the parameters to match the events table, but work is rolling.

So, the question is, where should this go?  In the admin section, or a link in the calendar?  Should it upload the file, and then insert it, or should it use a textarea in a form for the input of the data?  Or should the file be uploaded into the Files section of the course, and then the function pulls up a file search box to find the file and use it?

Fantastic.  I suggest the best place for it is to appear at the top of the data entry screen that appears when "Add Event" is clisked.  This would allow the user choice of single event entry, or upload of multiple events i.e. would act with exaclt the privileges and data processes of the single event screen, but allow multiple events to be added at the same time if the data structure was acceptable (need a help file with the data structure (mandatory + options explained).

Desperately need this......  Any progress.

Other option (only possible as "sysop") is to directly connect to SQL database and add them to the table (any problems/ dangers in this ?)

Hi.
I would love this feature as well. Any news since the realease of 1.6?

I am also curious about the direct connection to the MYSQL database to add events that Stephen mentions. Do any of you know of problems with that?

David

PS

Oops after I wrote that I found an excel script to upload directly to mysql here:

and a script to upload events from a text file here:

It would probably be better if this was implemented as an "alternative option" somewhere. For example, it might be good to have a new radio button "Upload multiple events from text file" in the "select event type" screen.

Definitely a link somewhere in the calendar however, it would be a shame to have this feature live somewhere where teachers can't access it.

Have commissioned mmodle.com.au to write this for the community.  Should be ready before end of Jan.

Hi Stephen,

Great news, thank you.

Just one question... will it be backwardly compatitble with 1.5.3? (I'm hoping so because I would like to use immediately on production system).

cheers
Mandy

Any news? I have just started the development of Moodle and this is the very first thing I felt needed to be available. Since we are now almost at the end of April I'm hoping that the add-in is available and it's just my newbie status that means I have missed it. big grin
