View a course without enrolling?

Our site does not allow guest access.  Students are automatically enrolled into their courses.  However there are some courses which we would like ALL students to be able to access without enrolling into them.  And thus - these courses are NOT listed in the ‘my courses’ block?

Is this possible?

Not sure what version of Moodle you are on but we have been experimenting with giving students access to courses without enrolling them in testing 1.8. We looked at giving any authenticated user read access to our courses by giving the authenticated user role the view course capability at the site context. You could do this at the course context if it only applied to a few courses.

Thanks Alison.

I am only new to this but think we are using 1.7.  I will check tomorrow.  But I don't think we have any role called 'authenticated user'?

If I go into the roles for a subject I have to select the students individually. 

Or am I looking in the wrong place?

Unfortunately the authenticated user role and the ability to assign a default role to logged in users is only available from 1.8 so if you are using 1.7 this is why you won't see it. We decided to skip 1.7 and are going straight from 1.6.4 to 1.8 partyl for this improvement to the roles as if I remember correctly we struggled to achieve what we wanted easily on 1.7. sorry I can't be more help.

Given the age of the original post I am really hoping that there will be someone out there who can reply to me question. Having given the authenticated user the view course capability it now appears that this user has all of our Moodle courses showing up in the My Courses block. Unfortunately I cannot work out how to make the authenticated user only apply to particular courses. This is necessary as I want to set up courses with images as links to other courses however there would be no need for anyone to enrol onto this 'feeder' course.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Apologies if there is a solution already out there on a Forum - I have looked but I haven't found!!
