I tried a similar setup and never got it going. It seem PHP doesn't allow access through shares. (Although I suspect with some changes in code it might.)
If security is the problem, you could try putting your webserver inside a DMZ and storing the data locally (this is the optimal setup), I run the MySQL remotely to save on services and open ports.
