Good question Abigail and I have been trying to think of a good answer. The only one I can come up with is that it could allow a different teacher to grade each group.
I read a little about groups (see http://docs.moodle.org/en/Groups_FAQ) and their use in any different activity depends on that activity and the way that groups have been programmed.
I find that assignments work pretty much the way I want them to, i.e. student submits assignment and only the teacher(s) can see/grade them. If I want students to see the work done by other students then I would use something like a forum to do this. In version 1.6 there you is a type of forum called Q&A in which the tutor opens the discussion with a question. Each student is allowed a single answer but can't see anybody else's answer until they have posted their own. Sorry but I don't know if this exists in your version.

Assignments won't allow students to see each others' work, unless you promote them to teachers I suppose. If I understand the problem correctly, your solution lies in the Workshop module.
Although Workshop looks daunting with all its different configurations, I've found it to have high value to learners - the (apparent) difficulty in setting it up for the first time is more than rewarded by the gains to students. And the second time you set it up is easy.
OK then - in a nutshell, here's how I have used it to best effect, which might be overkill for your needs but you can leave steps out if you want. Set up the module with 3 teacher-submitted assignments so that students can assess them and see the rubric against which their own work will be judged. When they've done this they can submit their own work for assessment, and they are offered an opportunity to self-assess and resubmit. It is randomly assigned to their peers for their assessments, then afterwards the teacher gets to make an assessment which I generally weight.
You can set it up to miss out the teacher-submitted stage, and even the peer-assessed stage, so that the assignment becomes a self-assessment.
The different options in Workshop make it of immense value in so many ways. In my opinion, its value to those interested in "Assessment for Learning" is immense.

Hi Abihail, Dave and Dale,
I think the real problem here is that an assignment may be assigned to a student group instead of a couple of individual students. In this case, if one of the group members uploads a file, it is uploaded for all the group members, and has to be visible for them. When the assignement is graded, the grade counts for all the group members, and has to be visible for all of them too.
It is very unclear for me why Moodle does not contain this functionality. It seems fairly basic to me in a collaborative environment.
Or am I wrong?
