Just want to thank the developers for taking on these huge, complicated issues like roles. I truly appreciate the time and effort and genius you invest in Moodle. I would also like to express my appreciation to the non-developer members of the community who have been so helpful and supportive over the years.
I guess that I agree with Christian B. in his profile where he writes this: I've been experimenting with moodle for about four years and find it the best Open Source (if not the best in general) LMS available. Especially the community that supports Moodle is a definite plus.
Moodle is amazing. And you all ARE Moodle.

ex·pect (ĭk-spĕkt')
- a. To look forward to the probable occurrence or appearance of: expecting a telephone call; expects rain on Sunday.
b. To consider likely or certain: expect to see them soon. - To consider reasonable or due: We expect an apology.
- To consider obligatory; require: The school expects its pupils to be on time.
- To presume; suppose.

(Yes, I'm a "bit" tired. Also wrestling with the roles here... but trying not to vent too much of the verbal steam...)

I agree with you that the roles in 1.7 could have used a couple more months of testing, refinement and documentation before an official release. Many of the "problems" were actually related to the trouble people were having understanding the new system (I don't blame them, it's a huge change!).
That's one of the reasons why I've slowed the 1.8 release right down. All we've been doing for the past couple of months is fixing bugs and polishing things up. We've back-ported many fixes to 1.7 too - 1.7.2 is much improved over 1.7 so please upgrade if you can.
And 1.8 Beta has further roles-related changes that were not possible to port to 1.7, it'll be much better than 1.7.x in my opinion. The release should be pretty soon.
Keep working and helping us on the Moodle Tracker and the docs: http://docs.moodle.org/en/Roles

The introduction of roles is definitely a great improvement, which demanded concept and interface changes.
Many of our teachers used to redefine the name given to teachers and to students (moderator, participant, etc).
Given the changes on interfaces related with assigning teachers to courses and including students, I would like to know if anyone could point me to a document or give me a hint as to how this could be done on version 1.8.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Leonardo

Re: Moodle 1.8: please no roles problems any more - about redefine role names and new course-specific roles
by Ne Nashev -
I'm suspecting that now it must be by message to an administrator to create the new roles (by copying the Teacher and Student roles) with new names... and using this new roles in only yours course.
And if You want to have in You course more roles, You need write more petitions to yours admin and try to argue him in You mind...
Martin, it is not too convenient way for teachers to manage his courses. May be it will be more useful if to allow teachers to add new roles at the per-course base?

In 1.9 there is already a feature that allows teachers to rename the site roles to any name they like. This did not make it into 1.8 though.

1.8 is the newest (other than 1.9 dev).
1.6+ is the most stable....based on my experience and my opinion.

Niki - IMO, Moodle 1.8 is the current stable release. While there still may be some bugs, a significant amount of testing was done prior to the release. In the Release Announcement, MartinD recommends 1.8 for production sites. Peace - Anthony
