I have used Moodle in our High School now for a couple of years and have a couple of Ideas on how to work within the current Moodle.

1 - I use weighted grades. My categories are setup as 1 - Homework, 1-Quizzes, 1-Tests, 1-Projects, 1-Lab Grades. These are then the first quarter categories. I have the same categories repeated as 2-,3-,4- for the other four quarters.

2 - In the "Set Weights" Tab I set the appropriate weights (20% each) and hide the other quarters. When the new quarter starts I just move what is weighted and hidden.

3 - I also make all graded assignments meet the same conventions with a 1 -, 2 -... as the leading text so I am always sure assignments are in the correct categories.

It would work even easier if you were a straight points teacher. You could just make a category for each quarter.

This may seem a little strange to teachers that have used products like Gradequick that sets terms up for you, but it works quite well.
