multiple choice answers from a drop down menu

Background info:
I've been using short answer questions for our Middle and High school students. The first time they see the question ends with TITLE, fill in the title, recieve 10 points for the correct answer. The second time the question ends with AUTHOR, they receive 5 points for the correct answer.

What I'm trying to do:
Now we may have the elementary joining us next year so I'm attempting to create a multiple choice format. Like the other levels students need to provide both the title and the author - but we want to provide a drop down menu for the elementary students to choose from the list of 20 titles and the list of 20 authors.

Multiple choice seemed to make sense - but the way moodle provides the choices is with little check boxes (ok circles) so each question would be really long and require scrolling away from the question to see all the answers. Generally students will go through the quiz once and answer the questions they know and then go back to work on the other questions. This would be very difficult to do with each question being soooo long.

I thought I had played with, and even created a sample quiz with drop down menus like this before - but maybe I'm recalling BlackBoard.

The imbedded answer style questions (Cloze) would seem to be the better fit for your grade level students.

I'm currently giving cloze a try - but when I try to upload the file - I get a fantastic empty box with no question - no drop down choices... Do you have a sample question I can mess with?

I recieve questions in Excel from many question writers - format the file - save to txt - then upload.

In {1:MULTICHOICE:Hamlet~Zen and the Art~=Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone} a wizard gets his scar.

Note the = sign just prior to the answer.

This book is by {1:MULTICHOICE:Shakespeare~=J.K.Rowling~Charles Dickens}.

Hope this helps.
